START
You are eligible to be considered in the contest if you are between grades K-8 in the state of North Carolina. If you are a coder, gamer, environmental advocate, or just bored at home, this is the place for you to showcase your talent.
This is a statewide competition for all eligible students who are interested in gaming or coding. The instructions are simple. You can create any type of video game that teaches anything about conserving the environment. After you program the code, run the program and take a screen-recording of how the game works (including game play). You must also take a picture of yourself with the code to verify that you genuinely created the program. This could be in the form of a selfie or something else, completely under your discretion. In addition to those, you will fill out your name, email address (upload a parent's email if you do not have one), grade level, and a short description of what your game teaches about environmental conservation. Submissions will be judged on creativity, complexity, and correlation to the instructional prompt. Every submission will receive feedback from our judges, even if it was not selected as a finalist. Two winners from each grade level will be chosen, and the top 20% of submissions from each grade level will receive honorable mentions. All winners will be posted on the web page and social media, and will receive a special reward. We will accept submissions through July 15, 2020 at 11:59 PM!
Say NO to plastic!
Help keep me alive!
Example:
Above is a screen-recording of a simple video game created on code.org that teaches what to recycle and what not to recycle. In this game, you are controlling the recycle bin. You must move your character to try and catch the recyclable objects such as the plastic bottle or the paper, and try to avoid the non-recyclable objects such as the banana peel.
Keep me cool!
This competition is facilitated by Bye Bye Plastic Bags Charlotte, a youth-led non-profit organization that advocates against single-use plastic and participates in statewide environmental activism.
